Getting Away

There are emotional and psychological advantages to 'getting away' from your everyday stressors. This can include the stress of work, family, relationships, or other responsibilities. A change of scenery and truly getting away from the stress that can trigger long standing, engrained patterns of emotional or behavioural reaction, presents a fresh new opportunity to learn and heal. Travelling to Canada from the US is indeed a pretty significant 'getting away'. Meet new people, see interesting places, do different things, and experience a novel approach to life! It's been said: 'a change is as good as a rest'. Coming to A Home Away from the USA might be both!

Natural Canadian Beauty and Recreation

A Home Away is nestled in the beautiful Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, east of Vancouver, BC, and north of the US state of Washington. The atmosphere is warm, friendly and inviting; the natural beauty is breathtaking and awesome.

The Okanagan is one of North America's most sought after regions. Take in the rich natural beauty and relax in the warm, semi-arid climate, surrounded by forested slopes, valleys of fruit orchards, vineyards, endless lakes, and fresh mountain air. The Okanagan has become Canada's year-round hot spot for those in pursuit of recreation, rest, and a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.

The natural beauty of Canada abounds and is enjoyed as part of the program of recovery at A Home Away. We believe that recovery is about learning to live life on life's terms, fully, abundantly, and in balance. That's why we dedicate a full day, every week, to recreation. Whether sailing, hiking, or swimming in the summer, or snowboarding or skiing at world-class Big White in the BC mountains, or more leisurely cross country skiing or snowshoeing, there is a lot of variety for all tastes, interests and abilities. You might renew a passion and develop greater skill, or, on some days, 'get out of your comfort zone' and try something new! Whatever we do, our guests always come home at the end of a long day with laughter and expressions of delight at having so much fun sober!

Individual Attention

A Home Away is uniquely small, taking a maximum of 8 guests at a time. Therefore each guest receives an abundance of individual counseling time and attention. We are a home like setting, not an institution, where our guests get to know each other and their counsellors intimately. A healthy family-like dynamic provides rich opportunities and role modeling for our guests to experience, learn and practice everyday communication and living skills. Stopping drinking or using is easy, but stopping starting is the challenge. What we do is teach people how to live life on life's terms, and not only to "cope", but to have a rich and fulfilling life filled with freedom and joy.

We will get to know you and work hard to make sure you get what you need. No one slips through the cracks here! There are no 'back rows' in our sessions! Our counselors are outstanding, and the program is comprehensive. We get to know our guests intimately, and will help you identify and heal from the deepest of past hurts. No stone is left unturned! We care about our guests deeply and love to keep in touch to follow your progress when you complete your stay with us.

Canadian Hospitality

You will be warmly welcomed as our guest at A Home Away. We treat our guests with the same friendly, Canadian hospitality that any friend or relative would receive in a loving Canadian home. Unlike traditional American alcoholism and addiction treatment centers and facilities in most states across the US, we don't search bags or person. Guests are treated with warm respect and dignity, on a basis of mutual trust. Our chocolate lab dog, Cocoa, will be your friend and encourage you to take him for walks on our many beautiful trails, and around our neighborhood. We enjoy wonderful, chef prepared meals family style around our dining room table (often with a special Canadian or Quebequois flair). We invite our American friends to join us at our table, to hold hands together with your Canadian friends and give thanks for the abundance of life in recovery.

Private Accommodation

In most alcohol treatment facilities or addiction recovery centers in the United States of America, clients share rooms with 2 to 4 per room being common. At A Home Away, we believe our guests deserve the privacy afforded by having a private, single accommodation bedroom. The days are full of activity, sharing, sessions, therapy, and meals. At the end of the day it is important to have the opportunity for quiet reflection, to read a book, or write in a private journal. All guests at A Home Away have their own, nicely appointed, private bedroom.

State of Art Program

Our program is second to none and matches some of the best addiction treatment centers in the USA such as the world-leading Hazelden foundation in Minnesota. In fact, John Derry, founding Director of A Home Away, completed his graduate addiction studies and clinical training at Hazelden. John was the sole Canadian during his tenure at Hazelden and was honoured as class valedictorian. John has encorporated much of what he learned at Hazelden into the design and philosophy of the AHA program, and is now pleased to extend reciprocal welcoming to American guests.

But we didn't stop there and rest on our laurels. Unlike traditional US addiction recovery facilities, A Home Away is completely private, independent of government, HMO, insurance company, or any other third party influence or control. Being small with a simple business structure, decision making is unencumbered to be timely and responsive to changing needs and advances in knowledge and science.

The A Home Away program is highly professional, comprehensive and holistic in nature, addressing all aspects of mind, body, and spirit. We are not allied with any political, government, business or religious organization. The program is abstinent based, grounded in universal spiritual principles embedded in the twelve step philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Guest receive individual, 1:1 counseling, small group therapy of a cognitive-behavioral nature, and psychoeducation. Holistic elements include a balanced experience of healthy nutrition, exercise, recreation, leisure, music, art, yoga, sauna, and massage. For those that struggle with nicotine addiction, our smoking cessation program effectively helps those that want to stop smoking do so during their stay.

Our program is second to none and delivers results paralleling or exceeding the best of the best American addiction treatment centers. The difference is in the individual attention with respect, compassion and regard by professionals dedicated to providing the best program available. Whether from the United States or some other place in North American, our guests often arrive feeling fearful with hurts and brokenness. All leave with a sparkle in their eye, rosy healthy cheeks, a love of self and life never experienced before, and hope and enthusiasm to engage fully in life again! Guests who follow their 'Design for Living' developed during their stay are guaranteed a clean and sober life of happiness, joy and freedom.
